California Dreaming

Over the last year we have been talking about moving. Moving out of our tiny apartment and buying a house. It is something that we have been talking about for over two years now, but deciding where to buy our forever home is where we have had some great debates over. I am from New England, born and raised with a Boston accent to match. My husband is from Southern California, born and raised with laid back attitude to match. I am a crazy Boston sports fan, while he bleeds Laker purple and gold. I have been on the side of never wanting to move and to be so far away from not only some of the people that I love, but for the beauty of the East Coast. I mean, who really thinks Santa Claus is coming down a chimney in 80 degree weather. All the best Christmas movies are set in magical places where it snows. Halloween is made for ghostly goblins to run through huge piles of fallen leaves. And don't get me started on the rain. I love rain. How could I ever live without rain.

Then, I had my daughter. My thoughts on moving shifted, dramatically. I began to notice how close my husband is to his family and how much he missed sharing his daughter growing up with them. We Skype often, but it sure isn't the same. They have come out to visit, but then they leave and their is an emptiness left behind.

So we had a real discussion on moving and what that would entail. We talked about the obvious physical move and how that would work. We also talked about the emotional piece of what we would leave behind. It will be hard, but sometimes if we don't take chances in life we never really live. So, as Madonna would say, "I am ready to Jump".

We have a two year plan to move. I am hoping by next year. I'll be sharing our journey along the way.
If you have ever moved across country and can offer any advice please share with me what you think may help.

  1. I moved across the country nine years ago (wow, it's been that long!!) but that was right after I graduated university so it wasn't a remotely complicated move: I was single and all of my belongings fit into two suitcases. We've tossed around the idea of moving back east (most of my family is still in New Brunswick) but then again, all of Nathan's family is here ... With the economy being what it is I'm pretty sure we'll be here for awhile. Now to convince my parents to move west ...

  2. Imagine having a two bedroom apartment to move with a toddler! Girl, I have no idea where to start, but what I am doing is not buy anything new for the house unless I can easily ship it to California and if its worth the cost to ship! I see a huge moving sale in my future...maybe your parents will retire there one day!
