Over the holidays my husband and I thought about what precend we wanted to start when it came to gift giving for our daughter. We did not want to set a precend of buying a ton of stuff that and her learn to appreciate what she had. This was a big deal at our house. We both talked about how we grew up not getting much. To be honest, it wasn't until much later in life did I realize that we grew up pretty poor. I would have never know it, because I always felt as thought I had what I needed. Sure, that one year when I really wanted a Cabbage Patch Kid and instead I got an imatation doll that I didn't realize was a fake until my neighbor pulled off my doll's diaper only to reveal that there was no Xavier name tattooed to her butt check.
Now why was I writing all of this you may be asking. When will she ever get to her point. Well, blogland my point is that we decided to go simple and get her something to she needs, something she wants, something to read and something to wear. We found that it kept up very focused and we didn't overspend. We also had a very happy little girl who was not overwhelmed with a ton of stuff. Win Win.
I write this here today because I thought it was would be a good idea to use this idea to share some random stuff about me each month. I dare say some would call this idea a feature...
something I need...a plan. We are planning a move across the country. I am a planner. I need to have a plan. Many things are up in the air and the unknown has my mind racing.
something I want...the Sillohette Cameo. Does anyone have one that would be willing to give me honest feedback on how often do they use it? I will tell ya, I have been stalking Youtube finding all sorts of things that I could use it for, but the best is just being about the cut out custom letters. I absoultely hate going through my letter stickers and not have a darn A or E or S. It drives me crazy. This would solve it...I think.
something to read...I just got Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty. I am looking forward to it as it will be the first book I have read since the new year. I would like to try to read at least one book a month.
something to wear...I honestly have not shopped in a year and a half. It's just not in the budget right now, but if I was going to buy something this dress from Modcloth is what I would love is so what I would love.
I love the "something you want, something you need, something you wear, something you read" idea for gift giving. My family lives on the other side of the country so they always go WAY overboard with our kids - there were so many gifts under the tree this year that I actually took some of them - still wrapped! - away while the kids were playing with toys they had already opened and put them away in our closet for birthdays/rainy days. And they didn't even notice!
ReplyDeleteI've read a couple of books by Liane Moriarty but not that one yet. Maybe I'll put it on hold at the library :)
What a great idea with the gifts for rainy days!
